Forest School or Outdoor First Aid or Paediatric First Aid in Huddersfield?

This is one of the questions that is asked, because it can appear quite confusing.

Ensuring you meet your legal requirements in First Aid within a childcare setting goes withouty saying, but how do you choose?

Paediatric First Aid

This 12-hour course is required by those who are classed as practitioners within a childcare setting and are used for ratio purposes.

This course covers the legal requirements of EYFS and also OFSTED and your insurance cover, for those settings that have indoor and standard outdoor provision as most settings have.

The course is usually 2 days in the classroom or 6 hours of prior online learning and then 6 hours of practical assessments in the classroom.

Purple Dog Training Ltd do deliver both these courses at The Zone in Huddersfield HD1 6PT; These can also be booked directly via the website.

These courses can be booked via the website at a cost of £93.50+VAT (Blended weekday or Saturday courses) or £105.00 +VAT ( 2 day classroom course)

Forest School First Aid

This course is for those practitioners who work within the Forest School within their setting. Although there are some elements from the Paediatric First Aid, this is a different course, for a different purpose and does not replace the 12-hour Paediatric First Aid Course.

The Forest School First Aid Course is either a 2-day 16-hour classroom course, or 8 hours of prior learning, then 8 hours in the classroom for the practical and some theoretical subjects. This course meets your insurance requirements and is specifically planned to meet the situations within the Outdoor Forest School environment.

This course has been specifically designed for Forest School leaders, assistants and practitioners, combining recognised Outdoor First Aid principles with the unique needs of Forest School settings.

Reflecting the Forest School ethos and providing practical, scenario-based training relevant to woodland environments, outdoor learning spaces and natural play areas, this really is a hands on course

It is suitable for Level 1 and Level 2 Forest School Assistants who require a Forest School First Aid qualification.

Covering:

The Kirkwood Memory Walk 2024

by Helen Moss

What an amazing event this was where people were sponsored to walk either 6 or 10 miles to support the charity. Partnering with Basegreen, we provided the medical cover of 2 ambulances the first aiders and teams needed to make sure the event had all their walkers in medical hands.

The Kirkwood Memory walk history

This has been an event for a number of years, and only recently moved to an earlier start time of 10pm, I am told to encourage more people who prefer an earlier start time.

For The Kirkwood, the memory walk is a wonderful way to engage the community ,and further the mission of compassionate care, bringing people together who have a personal or business connection to this amazing organisation.

For me, I have a sister who has terminal cancer, and my amazing bonus daughter’s mum passed in The Kirkwood. Myself and Steve also have had friends and other family members of who been supported so exceptionally well by them- whilst in hospital as well as in the hospice itself.

Ensuring Participant Safety

One of the primary benefits of having first aid cover at the memory walk is the immediate response for any medical emergencies that may arise. Given that memory walks included participants of all ages, including the elderly and those with existing health conditions, the likelihood of medical incidents occurring increases and with over 1200 people and 120 dogs, our teams are trained to handle a range of situations, from minor cuts and bruises to more serious issues like heart attacks or severe allergic reactions. Luckily we had only a couple of minor injuries of falls and grazes to deal with.

The atmosphere at The John Smiths Stadium

Walkers started arriving at 7pm and with @HeartYorkshire and street entertainers on hand to help to build the atmosphere- it was brilliant from the start and I have to say I saw lots of people I hadn’t seen for a while which was amazing.

Emma from @HeartYorkshire foolishly gave me the mike….. and I then announced the dogs and owners were needed for their photo taking by the lovely @markflynn

10pm set off time

As the walkers set off, we made our way to the first point of The Kirkwood, where I  nominated myself as the cheerleader for the evening- directing people to the toilets and refreshment station at the hospice.

Let’s just say that my  ‘woooooo woooo’s’ appeared to be popular as I high 5’d the walkers.

3am (approx) Last walker completes

Let me just say it has been a  long time since I stayed out till the sun rose- and I have realised I am no longer designed for all nighters! So as much as I was really pleased all had arrived back safely- I was also pleased my bed was in sight.

Purple Dog and The Kirkwood

We support The Kirkwood as a business and have done for the last 12 months as part of their business group after all, you never know if you or someone you know may need this support.

“Breaking the Silence: A Guide to Mental Health Support”

In a world that often moves at a rapid pace, it’s crucial to prioritise our mental health. Yet, the stigma surrounding mental health support can make it challenging for individuals to seek the help  they need.

This blog aims to break the silence and provide valuable insights into mental health support.

Within our First Aid for Mental Health courses in Huddersfield, we look at what provision there is locally to support others with their health & wellbeing.

First of all  we need to look at what mental health is, and who actually has it.

1. **Understanding Mental Health:**

Mental health is as important as physical health and encompasses our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. By gaining a better understanding of mental health, we can create a more compassionate and informed support network. Everyone has mental health just like we have physical health

2. **Destigmatising Mental Health:**

Stigma is a significant barrier that prevents many individuals from seeking help.. By destigmatising mental health, we can create an environment where individuals feel comfortable seeking the support they need without fear of judgment.

One reason for this could be due to the fact that mental health can very often be hidden and is certainly personal to the individual, and what we can’t see can sometimes be really difficult to understand in the world of first aid for mental health.

3. **Building a Supportive Community:**

A strong support system is crucial for mental well-being. The importance of building a supportive community that encourages open communication and active listening is key

Historically, we had a kitchen table and no TV or Computer or mobile phones in sight. But what it did mean is that we spoke and we chatted about how our days had gone and what to do about any problems or challenges that people had.

That support network is sometimes missing now and that in turns makes it difficult to have those conversations.

We are all happy to say ‘morning, you ok?’ and expect the answer back of ‘ yes, are you?’ However that doesn’t encourage people to be open and honest about the situations they are feeling at the time.

4. **Available Resources:**

Providing information on available mental health resources, including hotlines, counselling services, and online platforms is so unbelievably helpful. On our mental health first aid courses, our learners look and  explore different options and find the support that best suits varying needs. This is highlighted as a sign of strength, not weakness.

5. **Self-Care Practices:**

Introducing self-care practices that can contribute to overall mental well-being is also a part we now sadly miss out on. From mindfulness and meditation to exercise and proper sleep, it is so helpful to share practical tips that individuals can incorporate into their daily lives. Empowering individuals to prioritise self-care as an essential aspect of maintaining good mental health.

6. **Encouraging Professional Help:**

While a strong support system is crucial, sometimes professional help is necessary on some occasions and this could be GP, crisis team, A & E or Samaritans in the first instance. Discussing the benefits of therapy and counselling, emphasising that seeking the assistance of mental health professionals is a proactive step towards better mental well-being is something we should all be comfortable in saying moving forward.

7. **Sharing Personal Stories:**

Talking about personal stories or testimonials to humanise the mental health journey can be really useful as long as this doesn’t take away the initial fact you are there to support someone else. Although real-life experiences can inspire others to seek help and show that they are not alone in their struggles. Both Steve and myself have struggled, myself from the age of 5 to be honest, when my life was turned upside down and support in those days wasn’t heard of, and that is why we are passionate about supporting and teaching others with their mental health through our First Aid for Mental Health courses.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, creating a culture of mental health support requires collective effort. By understanding mental health, breaking down stigma, building supportive communities, and accessing available resources, we can make significant strides in fostering a healthier and more compassionate society. Let’s encourage open conversations and be allies in the journey towards mental well-being. Together, we can break the silence surrounding mental health and create a world where everyone feels heard, supported, and understood.

Martyn’s Law & Blood Loss Trauma First Aid

Who is Martyn and what is Martyn’s Law is what we are being asked a lot at the moment.

Martyn’s Law refers to a set of proposed security measures, aimed at improving public venue safety in the United Kingdom, particularly in light of potential terrorist threats.

Here are the key points of Martyn’s Law as we believe they will be moving forward:

  • This is named after a victim: Martyn’s Law is named after Martyn Hett, one of the victims of the Manchester Arena bombing in 2017.
  • These are mandatory security measures: The law proposes mandatory security measures for publicly accessible spaces and venues.
  • Risk assessments must be completed: Venue operators must conduct thorough and rigorous risk assessments to identify potential security threats and vulnerabilities.
  • Contingency plans must be In place: Develop and maintain comprehensive contingency plans to address different security scenarios, including terrorist attacks.
  • Collaboration with authorities is a must: Establish effective collaboration and information-sharing mechanisms with local law enforcement and emergency services.
  • Staff training must be implemented: Provide appropriate training to staff members to recognize and respond to security threats effectively. This is what Purple Dog Training offer, with the Blood Loss trauma first aid courses we now deliver.
  • Incident reporting must be part of the process: Implement mechanisms for reporting suspicious activities or behaviors and ensure staff members are aware of the procedures.
  • Physical security measures to be implemented: Consider implementing physical security measures such as CCTV cameras, access control systems, and screening procedures to enhance safety.
  • Communication with the public to ensure they understand the security measures: Develop clear and accessible communication strategies to inform the public about security measures and emergency procedures.
  • Regular testing and drills should happen: Regularly test and conduct drills to evaluate the effectiveness of security measures and ensure staff members are well-prepared for emergencies.
  • Compliance monitoring for due diligence: Establish mechanisms for monitoring and ensuring compliance with the law’s requirements.
  • Applicability for your venue: The law is aimed at various public venues, including but not limited to, stadiums, concert halls, shopping centers, hotels, and educational institutions.

So the courses that we are delivering in Huddersfield under the blood trauma first aid heading, covers all these points as well as the opportunity to practise first aid skills for those trauma first aid incidents
